MUTANK

"Think Before You Think" (Boonsdale Records; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Mutank's "Think Before You Think" is ten tracks and nearly fifty minutes of thrash'n'roll that will leave you happily entertained, and probably a little exhausted, if you try to keep up.

Chock full of chunky chords and fiery leads, "Think Before You Think" just hammers away at you with its thundering, energetic rhythm section, vocals that have just the right amount of snarling growl, and a pummeling pace that's just right (even when its almost out of control, as on "All Against All," or slows down a little, as on the happily sinister "Metalheads for Hire," which eventually speeds up, anyway).  It's the kind of album that you probably shouldn't listen to when you drive; it'll take over your mind and make you drive too fast and probably a little recklessly.

My favorite tracks were the aforementioned "Metalheads for Hire," with its spoken word diatribe against the evils of heavy metal (not by the band, but by some kind of dumbass administrator or something—as well as the band's response); the chunky "Channel Change" and the spiraling instrumental, "Bad Magnitude," with its tremor-like rhythm and soaring leads that flow nicely into the funky next track, "Abortron."

Fans of thrash will find plenty on "Think Before You Think" to their liking.
