MRS. GRUNDY

"#3 With a Mullet" (Screaming Yuppie Records; 2005)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Mrs. Grundy's "#3 With a Mullet" is a solid hard rock record whose title will not only make you laugh out loud but might also mislead you somewhat.

Rather than the classic rock that's usually associated with the legendary haircut in the CD's title (i.e., Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mountain, Ted Nugent, etc.) "#3 With a Mullet" is instead a very modern rock record that embraces the classic rock sound and makes it their own. Don't get me wrong: This isn't close to nu-metal or anything like that. It's rock'n'roll, pure and simple, the kind of varied music you'd expect a band like Cheap Trick to play if they were filtered through Pearl Jam.

The band's unique songwriting talent and musical ability are remarkable here. Every song on the CD is tight and fresh and different than the others. And many are very funny while others are quite serious.

Mrs. Grundy promises on their CDBaby website that "the songs are not only really good, but they all sound different from each other." They make good on that promise with "#3 With a Mullet."
