MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE

"If" (The End; 2008)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

Mindless Self Indulgence is an industrial rock and synth-punk band from New York. Take Orgy, The Cars, Cake and a few other bands that rely on funky music and weird lyrics and you've got MSI. Oh, and add some Gary Numan from back in the day (there, that should confuse the heck out of you).

I didn't know what to expect when I spun this disc. You know all those dirty limericks scratched on truck stop bathroom walls? Well, this band took them and put music to them. Since Mindless is more punk than anything, they sing about sex and all the things that go with it and what's wrong with it. I'm sure this disc speaks to a few people; I'm not one of them.

The music is good if you like synthpunk, which is a combo of electronic rock and punk rock. They do have some guitar so it's cool in parts; I just think this stuff is so different I don't know where to categorize it. Most of the songs are short, like punk should be, so if you don't like one you won't have to wait long before it ends.

Its different, I'll give you that. There is a power sound to them but it's mostly synth. The drums do pound on a few songs; I don't know if they are electronic or not but they still thump. I like Orgy and when Mindless Self Indulgence stays on a certain level they can sound like them.

The lyrics are pretty funny and nasty and, though the booklet doesn't print them, you can understand them just fine. Even though they cuss with all the clever combinations that sound rude it does get a bit old after a while. Every track has some weird intro to start it off, it keeps things fresh but the last half of the CD starts to sound all the same.

MP3 favorites; "Never Wanted To Dance," "Evening Wear," and "Mastermind."

MIS: Jimmy Urine – main vocals & programming; Steve, Righ? – guitars; Lyn-Z – bass; Kitty – drums.
