MASTERS OF REALITY

"Welcome to the Western Lodge" (Spitfire; )

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

With only one original Master of Reality in tow (that would be Chris Goss), "Welcome to the Western Lodge" is a 13 track collection of plodding stoner rock that makes great background music but isn't the kind of stuff you'll want to play in the car on your way to Las Vegas.

Interestingly, the self-deprecatingly entitled first track "It's Shit," is one of the CDs best and peppiest tracks, while most of the other tracks simply ... exist. You may find yourself tapping a toe now and then or you might admire some of the crunchy guitar, but, overall, "Masters of Reality" won't light any fire in your rock'n'roll ears. It's either warmed over Pink Floyd rejects (i.e., "Boymilk Waltz" and "Lover's Sky") or so-so stoner rock that will more likely lull you to sleep than get your pulse up.

Not a terrible CD, but not a very exciting one, either.

Masters of Reality: Chris Goss - vocals, guitars, keyboards, bass; John Leamy - drums, keyboards, bass.

Pretty bad. Might make a nice coaster.
