MARGARITA WITCH CULT
"Strung Out in Hell" (Heavy
Psych Sounds; 2025)

The moment the first note of "Strung Out In Hell" by Margarita Witch Cult rings out, you know you're in for a hell of a ride.
Crushingly doomy guitars, brontosaurus-paced tracks, vocals that aren't the scream of a banshee but more of a tortured being. It's much closer to Black Sabbath than Yawning Man but shares that stoner/doom/fuzzy sound that simply crushes the life out of you, like a boa constrictor made of diamond plate (Yeah, I know. I can't picture that, either).
It's a killer album from start to finish, with throbbing rhythms and lyrics about coffins, murder, poison, worms and even outer space ("Mars Rover"). Some tracks are heavier on the atmosphere ("Conqueror Worm") and others are more focused on a heavier sound and a riveting heartbeat ("Witches' Candle"). And, trust me, you've never heard Billy Idol's "White Wedding" sound like it does when Margarita Witch Cult covers it. It gives the song a whole new life (death?). Interestingly enough, the penultimate track, "The Fool," sounds like early Alice Cooper(!).
Fans of Black Sabbath and all the fuzzy, stoner, doom bands they inspirited will find "Strung Out in Hell" just what they're looking for.
