"The Hammer" (Floga Records; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

"The Hammer" is a collection of fantasy-themed heavy metal tunes, featuring chunky guitars, epic songwriting, and a variety of vocal styles that blend together seamlessly.

This album reminds me of something crossed with Saxon and Cirith Ungol, if that makes any goddamn sense at all.

Most of the tracks are galloping heavy metal tunes, with titles like "Fire and Blade," "Barricade of Steel," "Revenge Comes Riding" and, of course, "The Hammer," just in case you had any question as to what the band's lyrical content might be. There's no question of the band's talent: the guitars are sturdy and driving, the bass and drums are in sync and pulsating, and the vocals are clear and appropriately robust. My only issue with the recording is the production, which seems to be a little thin. With music like this, you want depth and heartiness and "The Hammer" doesn't quite ascend to the peak of those qualities.

Nonetheless, "The Hammer" is a terrific listen for fans of the fantasy/sword/sorcery heavy metal. It checks off most, if not all, of the boxes required by the genre.
