MAELSTROM
"Sea of Darkness" (Self-produced)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
Rio de Janeiro's Maelstrom play an interesting blend of classic rock and modern power metal. Despite the undeniable talents of bassist DiCarmo and drummer DiBorgia, it seems apparent that Maelstrom is pretty much personified by guitarist/vocalist/keyboardist Cegalla. Maelstrom's music depends so much on his talents that it is apparent the band would not exist without him. With impressive fretwork that ranges from the sublime to the intense, vocals that bring to mind Alice Cooper and other "scary monsters" and a unique sound that is solid enough without smashing your head, Maelstrom are a very interesting band. In addition to the music, I am also impressed with the band's packaging which is very effective and professional.
