LUCY'S DOLL

"Formula for Hate" (Twilight; 2006)

When I pop in a new CD to review, the first few precious seconds can determine how I feel about the rest of the record. At 24 seconds, I’m liking what I’m hearing but, at 42 seconds, I’m crinkling my nose like a skunk just shot one in my direction.

The music is good and solid throughout; the vocals are not. Brenden performs guitar and provides vocals but his vocals are just yelling, speaking and and generally just "ya ya ya"-ing over the song. If I could edit the track I would omit the vocals entirely.

According to this Australian band's MySpace page, this is "Metal / Rock / Hardcore" and the music does have that hardcore punch but, man, the vocals are terrible. I can’t even hear the music half the time because the vocalist is like that yapping kid who tells his life story in three minutes, eleven times in a row! It's that annoying.

Unfortunately, thing don't improve throughout the rest of "Formula For Hate." This band has the talent to release a powerful CD and Brenden proves he's got talent with his fretwork. Hopefully, he'll concentrate on that in the future and let somebody else step up to the mic.

Lucy's Doll: Brenden – guitar and vocals; Wez – bass; Treen – drums.

"Formula for Hate" (Twilight; 2006)

The combination of music and vocals are integral to the overall quality of any musical presentation. The vocals on "Formula for Hate" by Lucy’s Doll are way off base. They're hard to get used to and, frankly, not very well done.

The music on the other hand is top notch and done extremely well. It's virtually impossible not to get caught up in the music ... well, until the vocals get in the way.

When you combine the rough and uninspired vocals with the great music here you get a CD that really can rock but the vocals actually detract from the quality of the songs. Lucy's Doll rocks with a lot of heart on "Formula for Hate" and the music makes that apparent. Sadly, the sub-par vocals cause the entire project to suffer.

Lucy's Doll: Brenden – guitar and vocals; Wez – bass; Treen – drums.
