KING PRAWN

"Got the Thirst" (Plastic Head; 2003)

Reviewed by Mike SOS

King Prawn is a British group who mix the dub style with hard rock, rivaling Sublime, Madness, and Reel Big Fish in blending rock and reggae. But don't lump this UK quintet in with the Bosstones and Goldfinger just yet, as King Prawn may also have a playful side, found in tunes like the ganja ode "Smoke Some Shit" and the ultra-funky "Gather Round." Still, King Prawn can get serious, too, as shown in the heavy dub of "The Dominant View" or the driving punk-esque punch of "Another Great Escape."

Like ska but find it too light-hearted for your taste? Allow King Prawn to strip away the plaid-wearing, horn-toting good time notion you may have about ska-punk and add some depth and bite to the mix.
