JUGULUR

"Jugulur" (Self-produced; 2003)

Reviewed by Mike SOS

California-based Jugulur is a metal quartet whose six-track disc, "Planet Dead," showcases a melodic nu-metal attack with some dark nuances, a la Disturbed and Godsmack.

The music this group bangs out is pretty accessible and radio friendly but only to a degree, displaying a thread of Hollywood Boulevard style metal, especially on the  flanger-led "Pain 4 Sale," a track that could've been written by Motley Crue in their heyday.

While there's not a lot of technicality here, "Planet Dead" never stops rocking and at times stomps with a furious punk rock intensity. Jugulur's best asset is its ability to be hard, heavy, and memorable, thanks to the band's pounding hooks and focus on melody, and chances are these guys are going to be heard from in a bigger way next time you read about them.
