JOE DENINZON & STRATOSPHEERIUS
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
"Imposter" is an unapologetically progressive rock album featuring Kansas vocalist/violinist Joe Deninzon, guitarist Michelangelo Quirinale, keyboardist Bill Hubauer (Neal Morse Band), bassist Paul Ranieri, and drummer Jason Gianni (Trans-Siberian Orchestra). Guest musicians include Michael Sadler (Saga), Randy McStine (Porcupine Tree), Fernando Perdomo (Jacob Dylan), Chloe Lowry (Trans-Siberian Orchestra), Val Vigoda, and multi-instrumentalist Rachel Flowers.
I mention them all by name because it really hammers down the fact that this is an unapologetically progressive rock album.
With its sweeping landscapes, it ethereal sounds and its heavy use of non-traditional rock instruments (violin, especially), "Imposter!" delivers what you'd expect from an album of this genre. It's a mind-expanding hour of impressive instrumental stretches, soaring vocals, awesome musicianship and high production values that deliver a mind-opening ten tracks of entertainment.
Yeah, it's a little weird hearing a violin solo here and there but, damn, if it doesn't fit. I mean, I know there are bands that have done this before. Jethro Tull and Mark Wood among many others come to mind, but this album puts that violin right out front sometimes. Still, it fits.
Fans of progressive rock will find plenty their liking on "Imposter!"
