JO BELOW

"No Control" (Inverse Records; 2021)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Jo Below are a four-piece band out of Finland and their latest EP, "No Control," is a solid collection of modern rock that brings to mind the sound of The Pretty Reckless. It's mostly mid-tempo songs with classic rock guitars and the sultry voice of lead singer Johann. There are some pretty hard rockers here ("Ms. Death," "I Confess," a couple of slower tunes ("Another Dimension" and the milder-but-excellent closer (and title track), "No Control."

Those looking for female-led power rock like Lita Ford and Joan Jett won't find that here, however. Those who are fans of the previously mentioned Pretty Reckless and, say, Pat Benatar, will find plenty to their liking here.

Jo Below: Johanna Kari - vocals; Roni Seppänen - guitar; Jonne Lindqvist - bass; Olli Vartiainen - drums.
