IRONFLAME
"Kingdom Torn Asunder" (High Roller; 2024)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
Ironflame's "Kingdom Torn Asunder" is an apologetic pure classic heavy metal album, from its irresistible melodies, to its galloping paces, to its soaring vocals, its fiery leads, its battle-soaked lyrics and fiery leads. And its artwork. I mean, you gotta have epic fantasy battlefield artwork to complete the package, right?
Does "Kingdom Torn Asunder" break any new ground. Hell, no. And you don't want it to. It delivers what it sets out to deliver: ten tracks (if you count the two bonus CD tracks) of classic heavy metal in the vein of Saxon, Dragonlord, Battlelore and Brainstorm. Pure, unadulterated heavy metal that's not meant to do anything more than kick you squarely in the ass and get that head banging.
All that being said, there is one very interesting thing about Ironflame: It's basically a one-man band. Andrew D'Caga, who has been in many other bands throughout the year, does pretty much everything here. With Ironflame, D'Caga writes the music, lyrics, handles all the instruments and sings. And he does it well. Pretty impressive.
I don't know about you, but sometimes I just wanna reach for something that'll reset my heavy metal mind and Ironflame's "Kingdom Torn Asunder" will fit that bill rather nicely. Any fan of classic heavy metal will find this album to their liking.
