IOMMI / HUGHES

"Fused" (Atlantic; 2005)

Reviewed by Snidermann

Tony Iommi is, hands down, in the top five best guitarists of all time (my review, my opinion). I got lost in the old Black Sabbath recordings and failed to check out Tony's solo material. However, his music will forever be on my radar to check out.

Now, on to "Fused." Released in 2005 and featuring the equally legendary Glenn Hughes on vocals, this is simply a masterpiece of classic rock, blues and heavy metal, with a shitload of Iommi's signature grinding guitar. Hughes is a perfect vocalist for this project with his high, gritty style mixed with Iommi's thundering guitar. I have spun this bitch at least four times and it just gets better with each spin.

There is not a weak song on this release. Each track is a finely crafted experience that I found truly enjoyable. Hughes was in Black Sabbath briefly in the mid 80s, and appeared on 1986's "Seventh Star," plus he was also in Deep Purple from 1973-76 as well as Black Country Communion and many others. He was also in numerous bands before the above listed.

Like all good metal, it always sound better really loud and "Fused" is a perfect example of that. A solid recording well worth the effort.
