IMAGINAL CELLS

"Purified" (Independent; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

"Purified," by Imaginal Cells, is thirteen tracks of progressive rock/metal that sounds fresh and alive and new. It's well-written, complex and outstandingly-performed tracks are buoyed by stunning production value and a theme that—whether you agree with it or not—remains consistent through its over 70-minute running time.

The band prides themselves on their "earthy" sound with "the sounds of nature" and, although I'm not sure exactly what that refers to, there's an organic quality to the music here that is undeniable. As mentioned above, the musicianship is impressive, especially considering the complexity of the songs, with driving rhythms and fiery leads and the vocal harmonies add depth to already hearty tracks.

It's virtually impossible for me to pick favorite tracks here because, like a book, "Purified," needs all of its chapters to complete its tale. I will say, however, that the massive self-titled closer, topping out at almost twelve minutes, is an epic way to bring the album full circle.

I will say that some out there may not appreciate the heavy-handed lyrics but, again, that's part of the consistency on this album. It shouldn't hurt the listenability of this terrific album but, especially these days, some will be turned off. On the positive side, maybe some will be turned on.

Imaginal Cells: Ethan Foxx - vocals, guitar; Jimmy Caterine - Lead guitar; Eric Barker - keyboards; Pete Crane - bass guitar; Steve Hambruch - drums, percussion.
