THE HIGH SPEED SCENE

At its worst, The High Speed Scene's self-titled debut is spongerock, pure and simple. Many of the tracks here are virtually indiscernible from too many other Blink-182 wanna-be bands out there and, hence, do little more than act as filler.
At its best, however, "The High Speed Scene" offers the goofy intelligence of Green Day and the musical quirkiness of The Knack or even Devo. Songs like the unforgivably crowd-manipulating "For the Kids," the hilarious "F**k and Spend" and the jaunty "In the Know" stand out from the others, offering the promise of good things to come from the band.
Not a throwaway by any means, although not a home run either, The High Speed Scene gets points for flashes of true originality. I just wish they had more of them.

High Speed Scene's self-titled CD is not hard, not heavy and is just a tiny bit, and I mean a tiny bit of punk. I cannot even begin to describe the things that are wrong with this CD but I will say what's right: The band's name. Too bad they don't follow through on the promise it offers.
