HACKMAN

"The New Normal" (Small Stone; 2007)

Reviewed by Mike SOS

Hackman's motto is "Better Riffs for Better Days," and they proudly stand behind their tagline on the scorching seven-track "The New Normal."

Comprised of former members of Lamont, Roadsaw, and Milligram, this triumphant trio are no strangers to the power of the riff, and they unleash the fury many times over on "ABABAC" and "You Can't Ever Get What You Want." But it's the unexpected psychedelic twists and true to form garage rock fuzz that propel cuts like "Fuck You, I Played Altamont" and "I Don't Need This Shit, I Played Budokan" that kick this disc into high gear, creating a sonic stoner rock stew bubbling over with metallic batterings, hardcore rage, and veracious spots of sludgy goodness.

Kick back, smoke out, and enjoy.
