CHRIS HOLMES

"Shitting Bricks" (MCA; 2016)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

The bad news is that Chris Holmes' CD, "Shitting Bricks," is a bit of a hot mess. Its production is all over the place, the songwriting is a bit stilted and Holmes is no rock vocalist; he does little more than talk-sing here.

The good news is that none of that really matters. Fans of Holmes' work in W.A.S.P. are going to find plenty to like here, with Holmes' trademark guitar tone in fine form. Add to that the unbridled, unapologetic feel of the album, complete with song titles like "Two-Faced Motherfucker" and "In Your Mouth" (and their exactly-what-you-expect lyrics) and you can't help but get caught up in the wild world that is Chris Holmes. And, even though he can't sing a lick, there's something about the fact that he doesn't really seem to care what he sounds like that makes it more listenable.

There are a couple of instrumentals here, as well, that bring to mind Ace Frehley's "Fractured" tracks. Interesting, but not particularly spectacular.

"Shitting Bricks" is a wild ride but it's all pure Chris Holmes. There's something to be said for that.
