GOREFEST

"Rise to Ruin" (Candlelight; 2007)

Reviewed by Mike SOS

The seasoned Dutch death metal unit Gorefest return with a furious 49-minute statement in the form of "Rise to Ruin."

This nine-track entity goes for the jugular from the onset of "Revolt" and remains relentless throughout, all the while throwing in shredding guitars, doomy dirges, and rapid-fire percussion along the way for additional texture.

Alternating between Entombed-esque death'n'roll ("Speak When Spoken To") and Euro death metal madness ("The End of it All"), Gorefest hits their stride while effortlessly switching styles and maintaining a well-measured balance of melody and savagery throughout this surefire death metal fan favorite.
