GLORIA PERPETUA

"The Darkside We Wanna Hide" (Rockshots Records; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Composed and performed by a conglomeration of musicians with seven different singers, "The Darkside We Wanna Hide" is a muscled heavy metal album with driving guitars, swirling solos and pounding rhythms that hearken back to the heavy metal of the 80s and 90s. The band sites Blind Guardian, Helloween, Iced Earth, Stratovarius and Accept as influences and, really, you hear pieces of all those bands here.

The seven singers invovled give the album a varied sound, which is important when it comes to this kind of heavy metal. Sometimes, tracks sound a little too much alike. With different vocalist on different tracks, this problem doesn't happen with "The Darkside We Wanna Hide." And, by the way, those singers are: Raphael Dantas (Ego Absence), Vitor Veiga (Aquaria), Christian Passos (Wizards), Joćo Noleto (Vocifer), Marcelo Kalunga, and Vitor Rodrigues (Native Blood/Torture Squad).

There's nothing new or groundbreaking here but, then again, if there were, that would be a form of blasphemy. Gloria Perpetua intended to re-create the brawn of heavy metal here and, with "The Darkside We Wanna Hide," they've done just that.
