GIVE US BARABBAS

"Luke 23:18" (Ever Reviled)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

One thing you can say about Give Us Barabbas right up front - this band doesn't pull any punches. Skewering the far right in general and Christians in particular (and hypocrites of all kinds as well), Give Us Barabbas makes their points of view known with explicit, often blasphemous lyrics, a rough, raw sound and a bleakness that blasts out of your speakers with a sterile, but unforgiving, force.

Their music style is nearly impossible to describe. It's a Frankenstein blending of Sex Pistols punk, Slayer speed metal and GWAR chaos. It is guaranteed to get your attention; but there is no guarantee that it's your cup of tea.

Fans of staunch political rock'n'roll who aren't afraid of an ultra raw style and in-your-face-like-a-fist commentary will find Give Us Barabbas right up their alley. Those who prefer their music sweet and simple had best look elsewhere.

And, if you're wondering about the album's title, Luke 23:18 reads: "And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this [man], and release unto us Barabbas."

Give Us Barabbas: Anthony Raymond - vocals; Mike Turi - vocals, bongos; Vincent Cacchione - guitar, vocals; Mike Curry - bass; Mike McLean - drums.
