GINGER EVIL

"The Way It Burns" (Frontiers Records Srl; 2025)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Apparently, Ginger Evil can do everything right. From the mammoth rockers on this, their debut album to the radio-friendly tunes ("Flames"), this band's music instantly envelops you. If you're like me, you'll fall in love with this album on the first listen-through.

Featuring the strong, sly vocals of Ella Tepponen, the powerful and song-driving guitar of Tomi Julkunen and a rhythm section that keeps the music hopping (Veli Palevaara on bass and Toni Mustonen on drums), Ginger Evil describe their music as "From Foo Fighters to Fleetwood Mac" and I can't think of a better description. "The Way It Burns" alternates between classic rock hits ("Flames," "Arrowhead") and guitar-heavy hard rockers ("Rainmaker," "Better Get in Line"), all of which deliver handily.

Your favorite tracks will depend on your musical taste. Are you more of a Fleetwood Mac, classic rock fan? Or a harder hitting Foo Fighters (and I would daresay Ramones) guitar style? The beauty of "The Way It Burns" is that you get both for the price of one.

I expect to see big things from Ginger Evil. The band has a unique and powerful style that's as fresh as it gets and will appeal to fans of all musical types.
