GHOST HOLLOW
"Examinations of the Heart" (Independent;
2025)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
Ghost Hollow do an excellent job at creating raw and dark sounds on "Examinations of the Heart."
The seven tracks on "Examinations of the Heart" are crushing numbers, deep and downtuned, seasoned with eerie atmospheres and drenched with growling vocals, dripping with melancholy and other dark emotions. It's a brutal combination of black metal, sludge, doom and death metal that draws you into its world like a wizard beckoning you into his cavern. Even if you try to resist, you're going to get pulled in.
My favorite tracks were the opening track, "Formless Apparition," which begins with a sound like that of Satan's band tuning up for a live show; "Lay Down the Sword," with its throbbing rhythm and crushing guitars; and the spectral "Intercessor," which flows over the listener like a smothering fog before transforming into a pounding headbanger.
Fans of any of the genres mentioned above (black metal, sludge, doom and death) will find something to their liking on "Examinations of the Heart."
