GELATIN SKELATIN

"Big Trouble" (SRS Cinema; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

"Big Trouble" by Canada's Gelatin Skelatin, is an apologetic love letter to the rock'n'roll, movies and lifestyle of the 80s. I mean, how many albums of any music genre these days start out with a tribute to the obsolete vidoecassette format, VHS?

It's all classic 80s throughout. From the cheesy cover artwork to some equally cheesy lyrics ("Bad Alphabet," "If You Say Kay"), from the classic fist-pumping anthems ("80s Ladies," "That's Rock'n'Roll") to the token ballad ("Ship of Fools," which still rocks pretty hard and the Rolling Stones-like "Last Call for Love"). The music is classic 80s throughout: Mid-paced rockers with big ol' slabs of guitar (including plenty of solos), singalong choruses and a rhythm section that gets the job done.

Cheesy? Maybe. But you know what else it is? A hell of a lot of fun. "Big Trouble" is the kind of album that I'll reach for whenever I want to clear my heavy metal mind. When I want to go back to the days when Quiet Riot was king and Dee Snider still wore a lot of makeup. (I might skip "Scream and Scream Again," with its annoyingly repetitive lyrics next time, though).

If you're a fan of classic hard rock/heavy metal, you'll find something to like on "Big Trouble."
