BILLY F. GIBBONS

"Hardware" (Concord Records; 2021)

Sometimes you just need to cleanse your musical pallet and listening to Billy Gibbons (one third of ZZ Top) and his new recording "Hardware" is one of the best ways to do it.

This is some good old southern blues done right. Nothing fancy: just solid, good music done right and with a bit of slide guitar thrown in every once in awhile to make it interesting.

The songwriting is all about beautiful women, drinking, having fun and getting high. I mention that last one because one of the cuts is entitled "Desert High."

This is fun, home-grown, solid music and vocals done by none other than the legendary Mr. Billy Gibbons. His style of gritty, no-nonsense vocals that have been his signature forever have been with me since the first time I ever heard ZZ Top and "La Grange" in the mid 70s. He has not lost his charisma and style even after forty years in the music business.

It is good to hear new music from Billy and it's good for the rock'n'roll business to have him making records. He will be hitting the tour circuit in July and I can bet that would be one great show.
