FUGITIVE DROIDS
"The Mechanical Maw" (Self-released; 2024)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
"The Mechanical Maw" from Fugitive Droids is one interesting (and small) piece of music. By small, I mean that it's only three tracks, and one of them runs barely over two minutes, with the others hovering around four minutes each. The good news is that you can tell a lot from these three pieces of music, enough to allow you to decide whether you want to hear more from the band ... or if you've heard enough.
Track 1 is "Rabid," and it's the most appropriately named track on the album. "Rabid" is a raging tune, with growling vocals, crushing guitars, and drums that pound throughout like a time-keeping device made out of stainless steel. I like the song composition here, too, with varying rhythms, quiet moments and an interesting flow to the whole thing. "Reaction," track two (the shortest of the three tracks) starts out with more of the same, and then throws you completely off track with sudden clean vocals amongst the barely controlled chaos. The drums really shine on this one. Finally, "Venenation," throws all bets out the window, beginning with a duo of sorts between the clean and growling vocals, and dialing back the furious pace but still delivering the goods.
My only complaint about "The Mechanical Maw" is that it feels like only a few chapters instead of a whole book and left me wanting more. That's actually good, in a way, because it means this EP did what it was supposed to do: Pique my interest in the band and their future music. Hopefully, we'll get a fuller, more complete album from Fugitive Droids soon.
