FORWARDHEAD

"Pieces" (Hard Volume; 2007)

Reviewed by Snidermann

Variety of musical expression is right at the very top (well, okay, maybe sometimes a little below that) of what makes a quality heavy metal act. Forwardhead's "Pieces" rocks on many levels, from the heavy chord structures to the soft, very well done ballads and the eventful journey through the middle.

"Pieces" proves that Forwardhead can rock with the best of them. Whatever musical expression they want to express is extremely well done. However, sometimes the style tends to drag and slows down the project immensely. I also found the symbolism a bit too depressing. Therapeutic for the band members, maybe, but not for me.

When Forwardhead keeps up the pace with hard rocking music, "Pieces" is one kick ass rock'n'roll record. When they slow down, however, the music brings me down. There are good and bad aspects here and, when the band shines, they really shine. However, the musical flow starts to slow, it can be a deterrent to the overall effect of the CD.
