FOG

"Through the Eyes of the Night Winged They Come" (World War III Records)

FOG is raw, unbridled black metal characterized by the genre's typical
anti-Christian sentiments. "Through The Eyes Of Night Winged They Come" doesn't exactly break new ground in the black
metal genre.
The fact that the band is American not European is also surprising as well given that American black
metal bands often fall far below the standards set by their European counterparts. FOG, however,
may be proof that that isn't always necessarily the case.
At the heart of all the songs is furious pacing and violent passages. Although the blazing speed can often detract from the overall effect impact of the songs, the band's momentum is unencumbered by anything that they do. One thing that Fog do well is vary the intros to their songs - this instant aspect of recognition separates them from some of the lesser bands crowding the genre. The acoustic intro to "The Leech Within" is particularly interesting despite its simplicity. Some of the mid-paced breaks are done well, too. Of particular note is the break in "Whispered Myths (Of Ancient Times)" as well as the title track.
The production is decent although certain things are obvious and detrimental after a few listens. The double-bass drums are relentless and the occasional flurry of tom fills are high in the mix. The overall production is exactly what you'd expect from a black metal band - a dense, harsh wall of sound that leaves no part of the sonic spectrum unscathed.
Highly recommended for fans of black metal. Others may want to buy
Iced Earth's "Horror Show" instead.
