FLORAL

"The Second Floral EP" (Esque Records; 2015)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

Floral are a two piece outfit, guitar and drums, respectively. They are instrumental math rock from the Bay area (that's close to me) and these guys use alternate tuning to get their unique sound. You might think it's a full band upon first listen. Nothing is heavy, it's light but grounded in a way that projects the melodies contained. I've found that instrumental rock can say just as much that a vocalist can but there is something about a musical instrument that's played like a voice.

Their first EP was self-titled and this one doesn't have some fancy name attached to it either. Matter of fact, this is just straight-forward math rock; add it up to a subtraction of voices and the division of bass to multiply their sound.

Floral: Nate Sherman - Guitar; Ty Mayer - Drums.

So-so. You've heard better.

Pretty bad. Might make a nice coaster.

Self explanatory. Just the sight of the cover makes you wanna hurl.
