THE FERRYMEN
"Iron Will" (Frontiers
SRL; 2025)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
If you're looking for some epic melodic heavy metal, then you've found it with The Ferrymen's "Iron Will."
Eleven tracks and nearly an hour of sweeping rock'n'roll with walls of guitar sound, powerful rhythms and magnificent vocals courtesy of the legendary Ronnie Romero, "Iron Will" is the type of album that demands to be played loudly. It's the Game of Thrones of heavy metal: Muscular, mammoth and bigger-than-life.
Romero's bandmates, the equally legendary multi-instrumentalist Magnus Karlsson and monster drummer Mike Terrana, give the entire album its colossal sound, with waves of towering metal that mesh with Romero's robust vocals and make everything sound big and bigger. Interestingly, this is nowhere more evident than on the calmest track on the recording, "Dreams and Destiny."
I can't imagine fans of The Ferrymen's previous albums not finding "Iron Will" to their liking. That being said, it's time for me to go back and re-explore those albums: "The Ferrymen," "A New Evil" and "One More River to Cross." "Iron Will" has re-piqued my interest and I'm going back in for another listen to them all.
