ENTER SELF

"Awaken In Agony" (Lost Disciple Records; 2000)

Reviewed by Christopher J. Kelter

From Knoxville, TN comes a death metal band that's brave enough to include a few groove and 'progressive' elements to their music. Enter Self play a mid-paced brand of death metal that could easily bridge the gap between die-hard death metal fans that like their music fast and brutal and fans that are always itching for something a little different in their death metal.

Now don't go thinking Enter Self are the musical offspring equivalent of Cannibal Corpse and Fates Warning - they're not. Changing tempos and slow dirge-like riffs inserted amongst the mayhem alone aren't enough to formulate a new metal category of progressive death metal. However, Enter Self do an admirable job of keeping the tone and aggression of American death metal while still adding palatable facets to their music.

If you like your death metal outside the norm, yet still aggressive, then Enter Self's "Awaken In Agony' are worth your hard earned money.
