MARK D
"The Silent Treatment" (Tee Pee Records)
Reviewed by Alicia Downs
Mark D, as you very well might imagine, is the solo creative force behind
Mark D. He produced "The Silent Treatment" as well as performing all musical and
vocal accompaniments (with the exception of drums, which are performed by John
Evans). Mark D's role on this CD is simply listed as "Etcetera" in the CD booklet.
For those of you not familiar with Mark D a little bit of history is more than worthy of mention. He is
the founder of underground punk label Alchemy Records. Through Alchemy he pushed bands like
The Melvins and Neurosis to the forefront of the scene. He maintained genius status
with his production work and went on to play bass with the Melvins during their commercially successful
stint during which they toured with the likes of White Zombie and Nirvana. He parted ways in 1998
and began work on his solo genius "The Silent Treatment."
As should expected from his musical pioneering history "The Silent Treatment" is an eccentric work
of sounds and soul. It has the beginnings of any genre you could want to through in
there - exploring that stoner rock feel along with feeling that the whole album is nothing
more than a heart driven jam fest within the psyche of D himself. The guitars are soulful and the entire feeling is one
that transplants you into the rock essence of a musical nonconformist and mastermind.
While "The Silent Treatment" is not a bang-your-head type equation it is
nothing short of an all out groove-fest reeking of brilliance and expertise.
