DRUNKELWEIZEN

"Pioneers of Alcohol" (Independent; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

I don't know what I'm more surprised about: That there's a band called Drunkelweizen with an album called "Pioneers of Alcohol," or that there's a freaking genre called "drunken folk metal."

"Drunken Folk Metal," as far as I can tell, is folk metal written and performed by drunkards. "Pioneers of Alcohol" probably has more folk than metal. But you can feel the booze flowing through every aspect of "Pioneers of Alcohol." From the goofy artwork, to the song titles ("Robinhood of Moonshine," "Draining the Cask," "Lines on Ale," etc.) to the liquor-sodden lyrics, to the electrified folk metal sounds. It's the kind of music you'd expect the sailors in the film "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" to be singing if the film were produced by Troma instead of Disney.

Yeah, it's weird. It's disconcerting. It's more than a little crazy. It's also a hell of a lot of fun. This is type of music you play at your next party, while passing out red Solo cups filled with beer or shotglasses overflowing with rum. I mean, I don't think this is everyday listening material but, man, there's a time for it and it'll leave a grin on your face after each time through.

So-so. You've heard better.

Pretty bad. Might make a nice coaster.

Self explanatory. Just the sight of the cover makes you wanna hurl.
