DOG FACED GODS
"Spit in My Eye" (Voodoo National; 2008)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
For the most part, "Spit In Your Eye" has a lot in common with "The Blessed Hellride"-era Black Label Society. The guitars are rough and crushing, the vocals gruff and hearty, the songs littered with profanity (how can a song titled "Bad Mother Fucker" not be?).
There are other times, however, when the CD sounds more along the lines of Incubus (when things smooth out a little) or even Ice T's Body Count (when the rap influence creeps in ... but always just a little).
The first time through, "Spit In My Eye" doesn't much impress. It's entertaining enough but it doesn't leave a real mark. Consequent plays have the CD growing on me rather quickly. Maybe I'm discovering hooks that weren't so obvious the first time through.
Definitely worth a listen, "Spit In My Eye" delivers a solid kick in the ass throughout.
Dog Faced Gods: Raymond "Shorty" WhiteOwl - mic; Paul "Pizz" Garcia - drums and background vocals; Aaron "Hessian" Brown - guitars and background vocals; William "Curly Bill" Winburn - bass; Duane "Dinky" Jones - touring Lead guitarist.
