DIMMZ
"This is Life" (Self-released; 2009)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
You'll be caught up instantly with Dimmz's "This is Life" from the first time you play it through. The driving, tight, fuzzy guitars will grab you like a Velcro hook to a loop. It sounds like a cleaner, crisper version of the Ramones ... at first. Because what's really interesting about "This is Life" is the way it changes from the first part of the CD to the last.
Track 1, "So Easy," is pure punk pleasure, with its pummeling guitars and sneering vocals. Track 2, "Cancer," sounds more like Megadeth. By the time Track 7, "Way of Life," rolls around, things are starting to sound a little like Metallica. At the same time, however, you're always aware you're listening to Dimmz. The band's unique tone, songwriting style and vocals don't simply copy the sound of those monster bands, they use it as a base and grow from there.
"This is Life" is solid throughout and begs for immediate replays. Like most albums of this type, it sounds better cranked to full volume and I can only imagine how the band kicks this into high gear during a live show.
Dimmz: Sonny: Vocals and guitar; Andreas: Lead guitar; Andy: Drums; Jens: Bass.
