DIAMONDS AND GUNS
"Making Cash for Heartless Crooks" (Independent; 2023)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
One of t he things I've always love about punk rock is that it's got so many iterations. There's the straight forward speed of the Ramones, the raw wound of the Sex Pistols, the pop punk of Blink-182. And so many more. It's all punk. You know it by its edge, by its delivery.
Diamonds and Guns remind me most of the raw and genuine sound of the Dropkick Murphys. Their music is fast and fresh and instantly hooks you. This four-track EP (I'm not counting the first track, which is just a short intro) is packed with bright, dynamic punk from start to finish. With its driving guitars, its peppy rhythms, its instant addictiveness, "Making Cash for Heartless Crooks" is instantly likeable (despite its depressing title). It's the kind of music you'd like to hear while you're sitting at the bar, drinking a beer and having a good time with your friends.
My only complaint is the same one I have for many EPs: Four more tracks is just enough. So this EP has done exactly what an EP is supposed to: it makes you yearn for more from the band. I know I certainly look forward to more from Diamonds and Guns.
