DEVICE
"Device" (Warner Bros. Records; 2013)
Reviewed by Jeff Rogers
Device is David Draiman's side project. Draiman, of
course, is the lead vocalist for Disturbed. Device's first single, "Vilify,"
sounded exactly like Disturbed which had a few people scratching their heads ...
namely me because a side project should not be an extension of your signature
sound but a way to branch out and leave the shade of your proverbial roots.
After a couple of listens through "Device" however, I have changed my stance,
Device is a side project primarily because Draiman has a lot of guest
appearances on his roster: Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Glenn Hughes, Serj Tankian
(System of a Down), Tom Morello and Geezer Butler.
Disturbed usually has a cover song on their discs and Device do the same. The
track here is "Close My Eyes Forever," an Ozzy and Lita Ford duet, here with
Draiman and Lzzy Hale belting out the tune. They don't do much except amp it up,
a lot! Geno Lenardo played guitar for Filter and they've always had a unique
sound so when he and Draiman get together and add some guest spots, well, it
sounds heavy but fresh with each track.
There are only ten tracks on this disc so it's a short
listen, clocking in at just forty minutes, but that just gives you a chance to
hear it a lot more than once. "Opinion" is the heaviest track on "Device" simply
because its got Tom Morello scarring his fingers on one of his unremarkable
riffs.
Device: David Draiman - lead vocals, Geno Lenardo - guitar. Yeah, that's it, two
dudes, one from Disturbed and the other from Filter and, of course, their
special guests.

So-so. You've heard better.
Pretty bad. Might make a nice coaster.
Self explanatory. Just the sight of the cover makes you wanna hurl.
