DELVING
"All Paths Diverge" (Blues Funeral Recording; 2024)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
Delving is the solo project by Elder's frontman Nick DiSalvo. It's seven tracks of mind-bending instrumental music that DiSalvo thinks doesn't quite fit under the Elder umbrella . The music here has been described as "progressive with a heavy focus on psychedelic rock, krautrock, early electronic music and ambient sounds." It reminds me a bit of Tangerine Dream and of some of the instrumental work that Derek Sherinian has been doing. It's mind-expanding, all-encompassing, the kind of music that is better when listened to with headphones. Atmospheric, epic (with one track, "Zodiak," coming in at over thirteen minutes) and full of emotional sway.
It's also not for everyone. Rough Edge Readers wanting a harder, heavier, faster recording will have to look somewhere else. But those who are fans of introspective, instrumental and very personal music may find Delving's "All Paths Diverge" a memorable listening experience.
