DAS MOOSE
"Moosehenge" (Independent; 2024)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
Any band that's proud to call themselves the "Greatest Heavy Metal Band In Park Slope" can't be all bad ... and Das Moose isn't. "Moosehenge" is nine tracks that fuse various types of rock'n'roll, from stoner fuzz to punk rock attitude to bluesy drawl, Das Moose drops it all in a blender and delivers an album that has tracks as varied as the Motorhead-speed opener "Death, Death and More Death" to the blues-tinged ballad "Forgiveness Blues" to the pure punk theme song from the forthcoming slasher movie, "Traction Park Massacre," entitled (of course) "Traction Park Massacre: (Don't Cry for Me)" (which is directed and the band's vocalist/guitarist Adam Dubin).
It doesn't all work. Sometimes a song just doesn't click—musically, as well as lyrically—and you just can't wait for it to be over (which is why God made Skip buttons). But most of the time, "Moosehenge" is quite entertaining, especially on tracks like the fiery "Gasoline," the previously-mentioned opening track, "Death, Death and More Death," and the Ramones-like "All Systems Go (for the Apocalypse."
"Greatest Heavy Metal Band in Park Slope?" Maybe. Whatever they are, Das Moose makes "Moosehenge" interesting enough to warrant a listen.
