DAN DARK

"Dark Avenger" (Metalworld; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Maybe I'm just in that fuckin' mood, but Dan Dark's new solo album, "Dark Avenger" is a kick-ass hard rock/heavy metal album that reminds me again why I love this music so damn much.

Dark, former vocalist for TORCH (amongst others) delivers eight driving tracks on "Dark Avenger," and they're all bracing hard rockers, with fiery guitars, Dark's perfect rock'n'roll voice (think Brian Dickinson meets Biff Byford) and rousing rhythm and tempos. You know you're in for a treat when the first track, "Scream for Rock'n'Roll" has you already pumping your fists in the air, and making you want to hit the replay button before even moving on to the next track. But the next seven tracks continue the pure hard rocking, with the Accept-like "Bring Down the Wall" the bulldozer,  "She Wolf Boogie" and the rock'n'roll tribute that is "Trouble Is My Name." In fact, things only slow down on the final track, "The World Before My Eyes," which features a poignant vocal from Dark and is perfectly placed at the album's end.

"Dark Avenger" is the kind of album you can listen to often, and the record you reach for when you want something just to pure and simply kick some rock'n'roll ass. This is just the album you need when it's time to clear your heavy metal mind and get back to basics.
