THE CHRIS SLADE TIMELINE

"Timescape" (Bravewords Records; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Chris Slade, as many regular readers know, was the drummer for AC/DC for about five years, but he was played on eight records by the Manfred Mann Band and worked with Asia, Uriah Heep, The Firm and Tom Jones, among many others. Since 2012, Slade has played and toured with this band, The Chris Slade Timeline, playing tracks from throughout his amazingly extensive career.

Apparently, after being asked again and again when The Chris Slade Timeline would release an album of original music, Slade decided to do so. The result is "Timescape."

Like Slade's career, "Timescape" is an eclectic collection of songs, ranging from the smooth soft rock of "Joybringer" and "Living the Dream," to the retro hard rock flavor of "Sundance," to the heavy metal "Back with a Vengeance." There is about an even mix of original material and cover tunes here as well, including the aforementioned "Joybringer" and arguably Manfred Mann's biggest hit, "Blinded By the Light," plus Asia's "Free," "July Morning" by Uriah Heep and five AC/DC covers.

Overall, "Timescape" is a terrific celebration of one of rock's greatest artists, and the many different sounds he's been part of for his nearly sixty year career (which began in 1965 with Sir Tom Jones).
