CHOKE CHAIN

"Choke on This" (Vanity Music Group; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Choke Chain is a band out of Phoenix, AZ, and their new release, "Choke on This" is pure, unapologetic, 80s, maybe 90s, metal. I haven't had this much fun listening to an album in a long, long time.

"Choke on This" is chock-full of razor-edged guitar, addictive riffs, playfully sleazy vocals (and their accompanying lyrics) and lots of fist-pumping energy. I hear traces of the band's (apparent) influences throughout: Kiss, Ratt, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, and a dash of Dead Boys here and there. If you're into any of those bands, Choke Chain are worth looking into.

My favorite tracks are "Beg and Plead," which bulldozes its way through your eardrums like Kiss' "War Machine;" the driving (and surprisingly insightful) "What You Want," the devastating closer, "The Dirge," and my favorite track, the spiraling "Liar."

I realize there are listeners out there who won't like the raw, rough-edged sound of Choke Chain and "Choke on This," preferring the slicked down, higher-produced sounds of some of the bands that are plainly Choke Chain's influences but, for my money, that's party of this recordings charm.
