CHANGING TYMZ

"Finish the Race" (Changing X Records; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

"Finish the Race" begins with a rather grim spoken word intro entitled "The Search for Clarity." It leaves you not knowing what to expect. Are you going to be listening to another depressing metal record about the end of the world? Or is there a tinge of hope to be heard in the narrator's voice as he closes the track?

Fortunately, Changing Tymz takes the "hope" path for "Finish the Race." The following twelve tracks are progressive rock and progressive metal rockers with driving guitars, stinging solos (especially on tracks like "The Fear is Gone"), a strong rhythm section and solid lead vocals that transcend the genre. Most of the tracks are mid-tempo rockers, with the exception of "In the Darkness," which starts off like a heavy ballad and the builds into a louder, faster sound with a fiery guitar solo. And "Shark Attack: A Grim Attack," the album closer, gallops along like an Iron Maiden tune.

My favorite tracks were the aforementioned "The Fear is Gone," the smoky "Barely Alive" and the appropriately entitled "Passion," in which lead vocalist Joann E Wolfe truly shines.

The band cites "the likes of Queensryche, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Rush, Black Sabbath, Heart, Five Finger Death Punch, and Halestorm" as influences and a little of all of those can be heard here on "Finish the Race." If you're into any of those amazing bands, then you'll find something to your liking here.

Changing Tymz: Brian Weber-Guitars & Backing Vocals, Timmy Wysong-Guitars & Backing Vocals, Tony Rossi-Drums, Bryan McQuade-Bass & Backing Vocals, Joann E Wolfe-Lead Vocals.
