CASTLE RAT

"The Bestiary" (King Volume Records/Blues Funeral Recordings; 2025)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Castle Rat's music is an interesting combination of fuzzy stoner sound mixed with metal riffs and leads mixed with progressive rock and a vocalist whose haunting, ethereal vocals surround you like an ocean fog. It's an ominous, fantasy-driven (I mean, the album cover has a unicorn and a wizard on it) collection of tracks that draws you into its world, for better or for worse, and holds you through for its nearly one-hour runtime. This is the type of music that's best listened to with headphones, volume turned up to a dangerous level, with all the lights off and no chance for the listener to be distracted.

If you're looking for something fast like Slayer or Motorhead, you won't find it here. But you will find an album that creates its own world, and takes you on a tour of it. Fascinating stuff, really. Just not for everyone.

Pretty bad. Might make a nice coaster.

Self explanatory. Just the sight of the cover makes you wanna hurl.
