CAKE

"Fashion Nugget" (Capricorn Records; 1996)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

Cake probably found fame when their single, "The Distance," was overplayed on all the college rock and then modern rock radio stations. Their type of music is alternative and that word means everything when you cue up Cake. The other single that garnered some attention was the cover song, "I Will Survive," originally made famous by Gloria Gaynor. This disc adorns the Parents Advisory sticker for their use of the F-word in the song "I Will Survive" (which does not appear in the original recording) and for profanity in the song "Nugget."

Cake's music can be rockabilly on some tracks and then just plain odd on the others. I think that a Greatest Hits package would only include a few songs because I feel that Cake write music for themselves more than anybody else. They also cover a Willie Nelson song on "Fashion Nugget" so that might give you an insight into their musical preferences.

Fans of funk rock will love Cake.

The songs to download are "The Distance," and "I Will Survive."
