BUTCHER BABIES

"Lilith" (Century Media Records; 2017)

Butcher Babies has two things that I love about a metal band and they happen to be both female. Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey share vocals in the band and, with a great group of musicians behind them, they make one killer band.

Sometimes, I just need to make my ears bleed. Well, now is one of those times. "Lilith" is tight, solid metal music from the first note to the last and everything in between. I like female metal singers (so sue me) and BB has two. Holy shit, what a great fucking band. Solid from top to bottom. Heidi and Carla share in the vocals responsibility, very admirably I might add, along with strong guitar, bass and drums. Everything very tight and well worth the listen.

I have to say this would be one fucking great band to see live. I found two other releases from them and, frankly, I'm going to have to check them out soon!

Great music, outstanding presentation and a shit load of attitude that just sound the best very fucking loud.

"Goliath" (Century Media Records; 2013)

Butcher Babies are fronted by two females. They combine clean and distorted vocals and are backed behind a metal band that sounds like Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Otep, and In This Moment. Both fems cite Wendy O. Williams as their influence into the male-dominated world of heavy metal music, thus, they have a wild stage show and even emulate Wendy O. by placing electrical tape over their nipples when they are topless.

The music of Butcher Babies is nihilistic in its approach. It's heavy and quite brutal due to the dual vocals of Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey and it's also a breath of fresh air in the vocal department because some bands have one male vocalist who either screams or sings (not both). But Butcher Babies have both and they are both attractive. Call me a misogynist but they want the attention so I'm merely stating facts.

The music sounds great when they go full blast. There is also a creepy element to their approach; a lot of the songs slow down or have a shift in mood. Most of the time Butcher Babies are straight-forward, in-your-face, busting-your-balls rock. I'm sure they get a lot of attention for their stage show more than their music. Let's face it: two hot females, electrical tape covering their nipples, erotica while they sing about death and mayhem -- sounds sexy to me! Aside from their appearance, they do have really heavy music and anyone looking for a soundtrack that leads to bloodletting will find all they need with Butcher Babies.

As an update, if you are planning on going to a show just to see some skin you might have more chance of looking in the crowd since Heidi and Carla have ditched the nipple tape but still grind and groove when the music starts. This release, "Goliath" is the Butcher Babies first full length disc, they started with a self-titled EP.

Butcher Babies: Heidi Shepherd - vocals; Carla Harvey - vocals; Jason Klein - bass; Henry Flury - guitar; Chrissy Warner - drums.
