BURIAL
"Enlightened With Pain" (Lost Disciple Records; 2000)
Reviewed by Christopher J. Kelter
Burial are classic American death metal and - wouldn't you
know it? - these guys really lay the brutality out for the metal masses. Metal's typical
excesses are cut to the bare bone on "Enlightened With Pain"; as such, Burial can be considered throwbacks to the days of death metal when
Cannibal Corpse were pioneering the American death metal sound.
Although Burial doesn't really break new ground, their hyper-speed, linear single note sections jut
against neck-breaking riffs in consistent fashion. Burial's vocals are lower than low - these guttural
growls are enough to summon the spirits of the dearly departed.
"Disfigured In Flames" is the highlight track and it has made
its way onto many a compilation CD to stand the test against other death metal acts. No doubt "Disfigured In Flames" helps Burial stand a
notch or two above the death metal crowd.
The production on "Enlightened With Pain" is pretty good for a death metal act.
If you dig Cannibal Corpse you will love Burial.
