BUILT UPON FRUSTRATION

"The Book of Mourning" (Da'Core; 2006)

Reviewed by Christopher J. Kelter

Built Upon Frustration features Pro-Pain guitarist Eric Klinger. However, I get to treat this disc as pretty much a new band to my ears as my familiarity of Pro-Pain is limited to the occasional track that I might have heard over the years, but nothing I could recall with any certainty.

“The Book of Mourning” is a razor-sharp, pummeling effort that should please any fan of hardcore. To my ears it appears as thought Kilger and company ratchet up the metal influences rather than stick with an essentially hardcore sound.

Built Upon Frustration evokes the kind of angry sound mustered by Hatebreed. The technical precision of Built Upon Frustration is similar to Lamb of God’s relentless attack especially in the way that the drums are the primary propulsive machine of the band’s sound. The sound of the guitars is muscular while the guitar riffs are exercises in concise, well-timed hooks.

“The Book of Mourning” is one of the more pleasant surprises I’ve had the pleasure of hearing in 2006 despite my general reluctance to embrace the hardcore/metalcore genre.

“The Book of Mourning” was produced by Eric Klinger. The sound is phenomenal as you might expect from a veteran of the studio and concert scenes.

Built Upon Frustration: Eric Klinger on guitar and vocals, Derek Kovacs on guitar and vocals, Josh Seanor on bass guitar, and Mike Papariella on drums.

For me, heavy music was an acquired taste, but now that the taste has been acquired, I really get into the heavy stuff.

Built Upon Frustration's "The Book Of Mourning" is a kick from start to finish. Emotional metal is forced upon you like a tidal wave and never lets up until the recording is finally done. The CD is packed full of betrayal, rejection and a few other emotions I have yet to fully discover. There's plenty here for everyone.

Whatever you are looking for in heavy rock, "The Book of Mourning" has it. Just the title of this band and their CD tell you exactly what you're going to find here.
