BUFFALO RUFFUS

"A Ilusão da Segurança" (Roadie Metal Music; 2021)

On "A Ilusão da Segurança" (yes, I'm copying and pasting that every time) Buffalo Ruffus plays music about "themes current in society as stagnation, hypocrisy, virtual relationships and distorted concepts of humanity." This, according to the label's website. And I'll have to take their word for it.  "A Ilusão da Segurança" (copied and pasted again) is sung all in Spanish, so I have no idea what they're saying. They could be bellowing "Rough Edge sucks, Rough Edge sucks!" and I wouldn't know. But I'll tell you this: Based on the attitude and delivery of both the vocals and music here, I get the feeling that Buffalo Ruffus have a lot to say.

"A Ilusão da Segurança" is rough-and-tumble hard rock, heavy with clichés, rawly produced and delivered with sturdy confidence. When the band rocks, they rock hard. "Whisky e Gasolina" and "Renegado," for example, sound like they could have come off the MD45 album that Dave Mustaine did with Lee Ving of Fear a few years ago (the version with the Ving vocals, not the Mustaine vocals).  Most of the other tracks slow down the pace a bit but still deliver the crunchy guitars and the heavy sound. The band really only slows down once, on "Confronto Final," which is light years away from your usual token hard rock ballad. And the final track, the nearly eight-minute "Dorme Tranquilo," will keep you guessing as to where it's going next which, of course, is half the fun. Elements of punk, metal and just good ol' rock'n'roll alternate throughout.

I really hope that none of the lyrics on (final copy and paste) "A Ilusão da Segurança" translate to "Rough Edge sucks! Rough Edge sucks!" because I really like the raw and unfiltered talent of this band and hope to hear more from them soon.

Buffalo Ruffus: Marcelo Rodrigues – guitar / vocal; Saulo Jorge – guitar / vocal; Bruno Santo – bass; Guilherme Barreiros – drums.
