BOURBON CROW

"Highway to Hangovers" (Horror High; 2006)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

In the liner notes to "Highway to Hangovers," Wednesday 13 (who appears here as "Buck Bourbon"), states: "This is another side of my personality and is in no way a parody of those artists. This is my salute to them all."

By "those artists," Wednesday means Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, David Allen Coe and the like. While that might sound strange coming from the creative force behind such bands as Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13, Murderdolls and, of course, the Wednesday 13 solo albums, anyone who listens to Bourbon Crow's "Highway to Hangovers" will know exactly where Wednesday 13 is coming from. The CD sounds nothing like Wednesday's previous punk/metal albums but instead is a pure outlaw country album, complete with lots of songs about booze, cheating women, booze and outlaws on the run (and did I mention booze?).

A quick glance at the song titles will tell you that Wednesday 13 hasn't completely abandoned everything from his previous CDs. The song titles are clever and funny, especially "Bolts in This Redneck," "Alcohol is Awesome" and "Drink 'Till You Ain't Ugly." Lyrically, although the tracks on "Highway to Hangover" emulate the great country outlaws listed above, they also have that trademark Wednesday 13 twist.

The music is pure country through and through and, again, fans of any of the above country legends will recognize bits and pieces of their heroes here. As mentioned above, Wednesday 13 considers this CD a "salute" and, although his tongue is often firmly in cheek, for the most part, "Highway to Hangovers" is respectful and genuine.

Those looking for the heavier side of Wednesday 13 will find nothing like Murderdolls or Frankenstein Drag Queens here. Those interested in seeing a completely different side of the musician will find "Highway to Hangovers" absolutely irresistible.
